Mobile Healthcare: Meeting Patients Where They Are

Swope Health’s mobile medical and dental teams prove that access to care should not depend on a family’s ZIP code, transportation options, or work schedules. The team continues to bring trusted, compassionate care directly into the neighborhoods, schools, and community spaces where children and families live and learn.

Swope Health’s mobile models are designed to remove barriers. The Mobile Medical and Dental Units operate like a clinic on wheels, with exam rooms and the ability to provide comprehensive services in community settings. For children and families, that means comprehensive well-child and dental exams, physical exams, health screenings, immunizations, and referrals can be closer to home (and often closer to school) rather than requiring a separate trip to a clinic. In addition, Swope Health’s Outreach Team provides mobile medical services for unhoused individuals and families at shelters and other centers serving the unhoused populations.

“Our work is especially important for families who are uninsured, underinsured, or managing competing demands such as transportation, childcare, and employment,” said Kenneth Thomas, M.D., who serves as Executive Vice President of Children’s Services. “By meeting patients in community locations or school settings, Swope Health helps individuals and families stay connected to routine care before small concerns become urgent needs.”

The approach also reflects Swope Health’s broader commitment to accessible, quality, comprehensive care for all, regardless of financial and insurance status.

Swope Health’s mobile pediatric and mobile dental teams are part of a larger network of KidsCARE School-Based Health Care Services that include medical, dental, and behavioral health care services and coordination. This whole-person approach recognizes that children thrive when their physical, emotional, and social needs are addressed together. In practice, that may mean connecting a child from a school-based screening to a pediatric visit, dental treatment, behavioral health support, or a family resource.

Getting the Word Out
In December 2025, the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC), sponsored by the Leon Lowenstein Foundation and Direct Relief, selected Swope Health as a recipient of the Mobile Health Advancement: Operations, Outreach, Expansion program. As a recipient, Swope Health was awarded $20,000 in support of their work in the community.

The pediatrics mobile medical team has used these funds to equip and outfit the mobile units;  purchase durable equipment and supplies to support event participation; produce marketing and community engagement materials; and purchase other administrative items to keep their programs running efficiently.

“We are incredibly grateful for these funds,” said Thomas. “Awareness and support of the work we do is vitally important as we strive to create more access for all the people we serve. We cannot thank NACHC enough for their investment in our program, as well as their consistent encouragement and support of our work throughout the years.”

As the Kansas City region continues to grow, Swope Health’s mobile work offers a clear example of health care moving toward people, not waiting for people to find their way to care. Every visit represents more than a checkup; it is a chance to build trust, prevent illness, support learning, and remind families that care is within reach. Most importantly, it is an opportunity to link individuals and families to clinic-based care within a medical or dental home.

For families across Kansas City, that presence can make all the difference.
