AEGD Goals and Objectives
Swope Health’s AEGD Residency Program seeks to train compassionate family dentists who are committed to caring for our diverse communities of focus through a health equity lens. The program’s areas of emphasis are general dentistry, resident education, patient care and community service.
General Dentistry
Goal: To be competent dental providers who use an innovative training model to emphasize a community based, equitable approach to providing whole person care. The residents will receive clinical and didactic training in general dentistry, taking a multidisciplinary approach to provide comprehensive dental treatment to healthy and medically complex patients.
Objectives:
- Provide residents with advanced knowledge, skills, competency and proficiency in general dentistry beyond pre doctoral training.
- Provide residents with experiences to effectively treat the whole person while understanding the social determinants of oral health care.
- Provide residents with experiences and instruction in providing emergency oral health care, promote healthy alternatives, prevent disease and use advanced dental treatment modalities.
- Provide residents with experiences through a multifaceted approach including health equity, integrated team-based care and community focused care.
Resident Education
Objectives:
- Provide residents with experiences to enhance problem solving skills for complex and special needs patient care.
- Develop skills to appropriately assess and coordinate the treatment of patients by utilizing an integrated care model.
- Provide residents with experiences to review current literature and apply scientific knowledge via problem solving activities.
- Provide residents with experiences discussing patient situations in the context of seminars and case reviews by applying evidence based clinical decision-making skills.
Patient Care
Objectives:
- Provide residents training on a fully integrated electronic medical record system for multidisciplinary care.
- Provide residents with experiences to make clinical decisions based on complexity of patients and didactic lectures to ensure residents are culturally and ethically competent.
- Provide residents with opportunities to demonstrate practice management skills including time management, workflow optimization and effective teamwork.
- Provide standards to track UDS sealant measures and quality of care processes.
- Provide regular assessments of patient satisfaction surveys and peer and faculty reviews for quality improvement.
Community Service
Objectives:
- Provide residents with opportunities to participate in community non-dental related outreach engagements.
- Provide increased access to care through outreach via mobile dental units and school-based oral health programs.
- Provide residents opportunities to mentor our undergraduate and dental students during their external rotations.
- Provide residents with opportunities for mentoring relationships with experienced dentists and specialists.
