Swope Health announces a new edition of its podcast, One-on-One with Swope Health, featuring Christal Watson, Mayor/CEO of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas.
Eric Wesson, founder and publisher of The Next Page KC, a newspaper focused on the Black community, hosts the show’s conversations with Kansas Citians about issues of importance to the community’s health and wellbeing.
In this conversation, Mayor Watson discusses her upbringing in Kanas City, Kan., and Wyandotte County – from her birth at KU Hospital, graduation from Wyandotte High School, attending Emporia State and later Ashland University with bachelor’s and master’s degrees. She is married, the mother of four boys, and now grandmother to two grandchildren.
Did she envision growing up to become Mayor of her hometown? Absolutely not, she said, but noted she did believe she was destined for something, stemming from a vision when she was 13 or 14 years old. She later worked at the former Sprint Corp., for 17 years, and recalled that she once wrote a mission statement: To be in a position of influence to have a voice for those that do not have a voice.
In her career, she also served as CEO of the Heartland Black Chamber of Commers, worked for former KCK Mayor David Alvey as Chief of Staff, and served on the Kansas City, Kansas, Public School board. In her campaign, Mayor Watson pledged to lower taxes, increase budget transparency, support small business, enhance public safety and expand affordable housing opportunities for all residents.
Mayor Watson assumed office on Dec. 15, 2025, and just a week later on Dec. 22, the Kansas City Chiefs and the state announced that the Chiefs would move to a new $3 billion domed stadium to be built in Wyandotte County. The new team headquarters will be in Olathe, Kansas.
The development, unsurprisingly, put a spotlight on Wyandotte County and forced a delay in the Mayor’s 100-day plan. “I had to move quickly to build relationships, understand the STAR Bond Bill, work with three new commissioners,” she said. “We’re dealing with the No. 1 team in the world.”
These days, as the state and the Chiefs complete the development agreement, Mayor Watson is focused on building relationships that will pave the way for future benefits for the community. She noted there will be a Community Benefit Agreement between the Chiefs and the state of Kansas, and she sees opportunity for also winning support from the Chiefs and its players. “We want to see the Chiefs be successful,” she said.
In this conversation, the mayor also speaks about her personality, her work in building unity with other taxing districts in the county, and the importance of fiscal stewardship. She addresses taxes, providing support for the unhoused, and working collaboratively and strategically to meet the needs of the community.
