May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Did you know that 1 in 5 adults in the United States experiences a mental health condition in any given year, and 1 in 20 lives with serious mental illness? Globally, about 35% of all mental illness emerges by age 14, and 63% by age 25. Mental health challenges are also a contributing factor in rising suicide rates. Suicide is the second leading cause of death of young people ages 10-34, and in 2023, 20% of our country’s high school students reported having thoughts of suicide.

Awareness and access
Early intervention can change outcomes drastically, but there are barriers that prevent people from getting the help they need. Sometimes, mental health conditions develop quietly for years before anyone — including the person living with them — can recognize what’s happening. Additionally, nearly 30 million people across the country lack access to affordable, comprehensive mental health care.

Swope Health is here to support our community
