Swope Health will permanently close the Optical Shop housed at the Central facility, 3801 Blue Parkway, on May 28, 2021.
For those patients who have ordered new glasses, frames, or repairs, your orders will be completed as promised. The shop is not taking new orders for lenses after May 7 or regular glasses after May 14.
The change is due to the rapidly evolving nature of shopping. With the rise of online shopping, expedited by COVID-19 restrictions, the business of selling eyeglass frames has evolved in recent years with many more options for frames. Customers increasingly prefer the convenience of virtual shopping on their own time and comparing a variety of options online.
Instead of running a specialized optical shop in a retail setting, going forward Swope Health will find new ways to support our patients’ needs for eyeglasses.
For our patients, including those experiencing homelessness, we will provide a coordinator who can assist with identifying and ordering prescription eyewear from partnering retail outlets.
The process to close the shop will take several weeks to complete, to allow for all pending orders to be filled. All patients with pending orders are being notified and we are making arrangements to complete their service.
Swope Health will continue to provide optometry services at the Central facility for children and adults. Our optometrists perform comprehensive eye examinations and can diagnose and treat a variety of eye diseases, conditions or problems, including diabetic eye disease, pink eye, glaucoma and macular degeneration. For vision problems that can be corrected with glasses or contacts, such as nearsightedness or farsightedness, Swope Health will assist patients with ordering and fitting prescription eyewear.
With the closing, Judy Howard, our longtime Optical Shop Associate, will retire. We thank her for her 38 years of service to Swope Health associates and patients. Thank you, Judy!
The lobby space of the former Optical Shop will now house a Community Room and Community Partners Booth area.
